After the fall of the communist USSR at the end of the twentieth century, Latvia emerged as a haven for a vast portion of the disseminated Russian population. This mass influx has given rise to increased tension in the country as it has fought to join the ranks of capitalism, in the wake of mass emigration.
It’s perhaps no surprise then that the growth of tourism in Latvia has struggled to take hold. Although, adventurous travellers willing to look just beneath its politically tense veneer will be delighted to find a subtle charm entirely unique to the country.
In Riga, Latvia’s thriving capital, tourists can take a trip through the history of the past few centuries in its World War II ghettos and unique architectural structures. Visit medieval castles in Sigulda against the beautiful Gauja valley as their backdrop. Lastly, don’t forget the historic town of Kuldiga - with its incredibly vast waterfall – which is truly a sight to behold.
